Everyone knows Montana roads and highways can be dangerous. With blind curves, small shoulders, black ice, significant snow, wild animals, and other drivers, there are many things that can cause an accident.  On a single day in October, it is not uncommon to see five dead deer on the road between Kalispell and Lakeside, and the speed limit is only 55 miles per hour for much of the way.  Here are a few tips to stay safe on the roads this winter:

  1. Wear your seatbelt. Wearing your seatbelt can actually reduce the chances vehicular deaths by up to 50%. This includes both drivers and passengers. Buckle up!
  1. Drive according to the conditions. Weather plays an important factor in the safety of Montana roads and highways – especially as we head into winter.  If the roads are in bad condition, slow down. Give yourself extra time to make it to work or wherever else you may be going.
  1. Observe speed limits. While speeding may get you where you are going faster, following the law and observing speed limits will more likely get you there safely.
  1. Practice defensive driving. Stay alert and focused. Pay attention to other drivers, stay calm, and seek to protect yourself from danger.

Despite your best efforts, accidents can happen.  This is especially true when other drivers do not observe the same safety precautions.  If you are in an accident and are injured or your car is damaged, the attorneys at diStefano & Mattingley can help you get compensated for your losses and expenses. They are experienced and knowledgeable, can help you work with insurance adjusters, and can help you pursue any claims you may have.
